Well, you need to consider what's called the working height. This is defined as the height that can be comfortably and safely reached when on the ladder and extending your arm.For example, a typical person about 5'6" tall with a vertical reach of about 12 inches can safely reach a height of 19 feet on a 20 foot extension ladder.Aluminium ladders are both light and strong, making them the perfect choice for home (domestic duty) use.

Aluminium Ladders Review: The Three Section Extension Ladder

Amazon.com Review
Look high and low, but you're not going to find a better ladder than this one. Not only is it incredibly stable when extended, it takes the place of seven ladders and two trestles, and you won't even break a sweat converting it. Two outer ladders telescope over the inner unit, and a locking center hinge on the inner ladder makes the A-frame possible without spreader bars or braces. The locking assembly was smooth and positive in our trials; the inner ladder slid freely and easily. Transforming the ladder from one configuration to another was no struggle at all. The inner and outer side rails are made of aircraft-grade aluminum; slip-resistant rungs and feet made us feel like we hadn't left the ground. Yes, it costs a bit more than other ladders, but you get what you pay for. This ladder will last a lifetime, and it's the only one you'll ever need. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

At Home Spa
Ambiance is pampering for the soul and a large reason why men and women visit spas in the first place. It takes the same amount of time to get a mani/pedi at home as it does at the spa, actually less time if you count driving, looking for a parking space and walking to and from the spa.You can quickly and easily create a spa ambiance in your home by lighting one or more candles and popping in a little Enya or Classical music. It transforms your state of mind from "I have to do my nails" to "I'm so looking forward to my manicure!" To really maximize relaxation, the more of your 5 senses involved in your at home spa experience, the better.Sip on your favorite hot tea from a beautiful china tea cup found at an antiques shop or, enjoy your favorite glass of vino from an unusual piece of stemware.Keep your drinking vessels tucked away and use them only during your spa time.Purchase extras for when you invite girlfriends to enjoy spa day with you.We love the scents, look and healthiness of handmade candles Made by Elizabeth. The Perfect Manicure.1.Remove nail polish.Use a remover with an acetone in it because it gets the job done quickly and easily. We love removers that have extra conditioners or herbals in them. They remove your polish and nourish your nail all in one step.2.Soak finger tips in lemon water.Squeeze 1/2 slice of lemon into a small bowl filled with warm water and soak your finger tips. This helps to remove yellowing from polish.3.Remove dead skin and cuticles. We recommend, Nu Skin's Body Lufra.Your hands will feel as soft as the day you were born! Rub the Lufra into your hands, paying extra attention to your cuticles. If you do this regularly, you won't need a cuticle stick and you won't get pesty, painful hang nails.4.Remove any stubborn calluses on palms and fingers.Using the Top Notch large pumice file, gently rub in a circular motion over stubborn writing calluses or roughened palms.Rinse your hands and pumice file.5.File your nails.Crystal files are best because they gently glide across the nail, sealing it as it files. No tearing, no need to file the sides of your nails and no buffing required! We recommend Top Notch crystal nail files.6.Apply a base coat.We use and recommend LA Girls Calcium. These folks just got it right when they created a base coat! We discovered this product at a beauty supply store in CA.After failed attempts at repairing nails which were covered up by artificial tips for years, we found this formula got our nails in top notch shape! So we called the company and asked if we could share it with our customers and they happily agreed. We promise, you'll love, love, love this product!7.Optional step.If you are repairing your nails and nurturing them back to being strong and healthy, skip to step 8.Reapply Calcium to your nails again tomorrow (it dries quickly), then reapply a third time.Wait about 5 days, remove your Calcium and start the application process again. After a few weeks and coupled with using your Top Notch crystal nail file, you will start to see a real difference in your nails. For greater strength take the vitamin supplement Image HNS.Taken regularly, you'll see and feel a noticeable different in your hair, nails and your skin in just a few weeks.8.Apply polish in your color palette and finish with a top coat.Selecting the right color of polish will really complete your overall look.Your nails, like a piece of jewelry are an accessory to compliment your overall look.Just as certain colors make us look washed out or pale, the color of nail polish has the same effect. To find out what your colors are, check out Jill Kirsch Color to see what is the best color palette for you.I was amazed to find out what color category I was in! I had it all wrong and now that I've got it right, it's totally amazing!9.Finish off with Perennial Body Lotion. This lotion goes on smooth, has a clean, fresh scent and absorbs quickly into your skin, leaving your skin feel incredibly soft, smooth and very sexy.

The Pranic Principle - Prana, Orgone, and Spiritual Energy in the Universe and Nature - Part 2

Large bodies of water seem to contain this prana and I feel that it must be, like water, a major and very important "building block" of who we are, otherwise we would not be so pleasantly sensitive to its existence as a source of blessing and nourishment to our souls and as such a powerful and perhaps necessary source of energy for our bodies.Prana is a vital part of yoga; it is the energy that transforms and enlightens every portion of one's being and a source of great happiness. There are even people who are seriously attempting to live on what they refer to as "pranic nourishment" which in itself deserves a whole book on the subject. Some even have claimed to achieve this very amazing thing called "breatharianism".I, however, tend to believe that only those of the most advanced degree of spiritual development can be born with or achieve such an incredible feat as actually being able to thrive quite healthily and happily without any food whatsoever for a very long time.Another very significant and interesting thing that can happen while fully infused with prana is the suspension of breath along with the state of consciousness called samadhi of which there are various types and stages. There are many such cases of breatharianism and advanced, breathless states of samadhi written about in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda.I believe that even sex involves the containment and then release of large amounts of prana. That is why so many mystics swear that celibacy is important, because so much of one's natural ability to maintain and enjoy the bliss of prana gets lost or used up during sex. Many of the herbs, "love pills", potions and other things one sees advertised on the internet may work by increasing one's sensitivity to and ability to contain and release more prana contained within the healthiest cells of body. The herbs do this by increasing general health, metabolism and circulation, the very same way more prana can be utilized for blissful experiences.Raw food seems to attract more prana to the cells while cooked food seems to repel it.Overeating seems to drain the body of prana also, while fairly regular and systematic under eating of very highly nutritious food and a perfectly balanced raw food diet seems to dramatically increase its presence. That which would make life seem so real and fulfilling is not so much how much energy is available to the mind/body system, but by how complex, refined, and how well it is aligned to its perfect ideal of wholeness. The more particles that make up an image, the more "real" and full of information and detail the image appears.Life is information! The more organized information that the mind contains and interacts with, the grander its quality of life.Prana is very exciting in this regard, because these finest particles of nature are capable of containing and transmitting vast if not infinite amounts of information and consciousness.Mysterious Pranic, Astral Phenomena and Beyond. Is prana a bridge to heaven?Could there be entire structures, subtle worlds, and even universes made of this strange material? Most mystics would all agree on one thing. that there are higher levels of existence or reality made of pranic and astral substance of finer and finer material. The world's literature, news, media, and other publications contain a surprising number of sightings of ghosts, spirits, UFO's and other sorts of apparitions that science cannot explain and even discounts as a hoaxes or someone's wild imagination.Actual events of this sort are hard to prove because of their spontaneous and fleeting nature. There are many witnesses but very little proof. The other difficulty encountered while trying to prove this type of phenomenon beyond a shadow of a doubt is that they are so rare to begin with that they cannot be tracked down.I personally have experienced several odd events during my lifetime that could only be explained metaphysically.I would be a complete sceptic if it were not for my own experiences.Spirits can communicate, can influence one's dreams, and can cause objects to move or even wake one up from a deep sleep by touching one on the shoulder which is what happened to me.During the time my mother passed away, during a dream state, I would get remarkable voice messages from my mother that I just could not explain in any other way except as some sort of after death communication.Because the spirit or soul just after passing seems to possess a very strong pranic vehicle, I was able to monitor some very strange effects around the passing of my mother back in December of 1991, such as unusual electrical disturbances in electronic equipment, an object breaking, tingling up my spine, strange coincidental events, being woken up during a deep sleep by a rather vigorous tapping on my left shoulder (which would most likely be from my mother's right hand), her photo pushed over, my sister's spontaneous channeling of my mother's voice during sleep, and dreams of my mother speaking to me trying to say "please take care", "look after yourself", and "good bye", "I will miss you", and most often, "I love you".There were also far more complicated messages and conversations that, being fast asleep, I could not remember. The oddest dream I had of her was one where she was with her brother-in-law (my Uncle Peter) who passed away many years earlier and appearing so young I would not have recognized him if my mother had not called him Peter.I had put a sign up in my bedroom (for my mother in spirit) and while in a dream state, I somehow overheard them talking quite excitedly about what my sign said and many other subjects. It seems that prana is not just random particles of energy that can charge up one's energy body, but also make up one's energy body and even finer structures of a very complex nature. The appearances of angels, ghosts and strange lights can all be explained by the existence of these finer structures made from prana that actually seem to be independent living organisms. Those humans who claim to be able to leave their physical bodies at night in such a form say they experience extraordinary freedom of mobility.Anywhere, any place on earth and most higher realms could be easily accessed. This absolute freedom of mobility illustrates how easily subtle energy systems can relocate themselves instantly to any other location and/or time in the universe. As mentioned earlier, all of space seems to consist of an almost infinitely subtle sponge like material (wormholes) that can transmit infinitesimally small units of energy to any other location and/or time in the universe. Is it possible that entire subtle energy structures can be transmitted in this manner? Could this rather strange spongelike aspect of space explain remote viewing, prayer, distant healing, and telepathy between people who are thousands of miles away?As one travels further up the "ladder" of existence either through deeper and deeper experiences of meditation and/or out of body experiences, one reaches up through the mental and causal worlds which are the very source of prana and astral substances.Everything that exists seems to come directly out of a holographic blueprint, plan and/or mathematical principle or basis for its structure with its roots deeply and permanently embedded in the entire Oneness or Wholeness of All That Is.And that is what everything boils down to. a unique combination of principles and mathematical laws for every event, object and world in existence.Really and truly everything in reality is just part of a vast and complex idea or holographic principle and nothing more! What mystics call the causal plane is the level where the blueprint of all creation resides; all the laws by which physical matter, prana, and astral (finer pranic substances) come into existence as forms and other phenomena of expression.Prana, God, and the Higher Dimensions.Actual geometric dimensions seem to coincide with some of the levels of reality such as the physical, pranic, astral, mental and causal cosmos. The physical seems mostly to deal with space and time (4th dimension) while the astral and mental levels of existence seem to have more and more of a 5th dimension in that time travel (which requires an extra dimension outside the 4th) seems to be possible on the astral and pranic levels, while the field of all possibilities, histories and probabilities (5th dimension) have remarkably similar attributes to the human mind and its ability to plan or conceive of various possible histories or events. Therefore, there may actually be a Universal Mind or mental plane of existence between the causal and astral plane which may actually be strongly influenced by human thought. This astonishing effect of mental power is a very significant possibility which may mean that everything in one's life may be strongly influenced by one's habitual way of thinking. If one wants to be in control of one's life, it would be very wise to immediately stop thinking in a negative way and entertain only positive and productive thoughts and images. The 6th dimension seems to correspond mostly with the causal (universal seed of all manifesting phenomenon) in that all the principles and laws of existence seem to reside there.Geometrically, a 6th dimension would be needed to explain how reality could organize and maintain all the different possible ways events (histories) could manifest. For all the various possible laws of physics and phenomenon to exist, there would have to be a 6th dimension to contain it all.The 7th and higher dimensions, regardless of physical brain and nervous system limitations, is the actual root of human and animal consciousness which is the "guidance field" of all thought.Thought (all possibilities - 5th) and one's sense of right from wrong (laws of behavior- 6th) would all be a non-illuminated mass of confusion without the guiding or governing principle of awareness which, by all practical purposes seems to need yet a higher dimension such as the 7th to contain its level of functioning. The 7th dimension is an instant "wholeness" or consciousness of ourselves, our world and even of the universe if one is cosmic conscious which is not too uncommon a thing to happen during a near-death experience.Every dimension is never separate from any of its lower dimensions. On the contrary, every dimension consists of all its lower dimensions which make up and define itself as a whole collection or series of its own lower dimensions along a seamless continuum that makes up a new, higher dimension. There definitely seems to be a Universal Oneness or Wholeness that "consciously" creates and governs all the possible laws of nature, while providing an overall sense of reality to our experience as soul living on this earth or elsewhere. When one reaches the source of one's awareness through very deep meditation, one becomes more and more intuitively unified and connected with the whole creation. This Supreme Being is the unification of all things everywhere into one, complete state of wholeness or oneness.Prana not as Restricted to the Arrow of Time as Material Energy. While all of the events of physical reality are severely limited to very restrictive laws of nature and must be perfectly aligned along a linear arrow of time from which there is no escape, prana seems to exhibit a remarkable freedom from all these physical limitations.Even though prana interacts with physical nature and does choose to follow some basic time-line principles when it wants to, unlike physical objects, it can also transcend the 4th dimension of the space-time continuum and penetrate the higher 5th dimension of time travel and all probabilities. As opposed to physical matter, it is much more controllable by the mind and seems much more closely aligned with the will of God as far as the existence of a Supreme Being is concerned.Because prana is not so limited to the arrow of time, it can send information from the future back into the present moment in the form of a dream during sleep or as a flash of insight or as a vision during superconsciousness.I have had several such experiences where I was able to dream of an event that actually occurred within a day to a month later! These things do happen, but are so fleeting and so rare, that it would be very difficult to repeat such events and have them scientifically confirmed. Some of it could be just coincidental anyway, but coincidence may be part of the "mechanism".Because prana is a mass of quantum particles whose nature is quite ambiguous (5th dimensional), it is impossible to nail them down objectively without strong influence by how they are measured and how they are observed.Even though all matter is made up of these ambiguous quantum particles and comes from the same material prana is made of, there are so many sheer numbers of these particles concentrated in such small areas (in the form of electrons, protons, neutrons, etc.) that the vast majority of all physical matter is kept very strongly in line with natural laws via strict statistical constructs. It is by its sheer mass and inertia that most physical matter must remain stuck forever within the bounds of natural law or the 4 dimensional arrow of time and sequence of logic such as the aging process.Prana is far more interesting than matter because its relative mass is so minute, so uncertain, and is not nearly as restricted to the limitations of time and space. It is a free energy spontaneously operating out of the 5th dimension where time breaks down and distance is no longer an obstacle. It can willingly work within the physical laws of nature and yet can jump outside of all time and space into the 5th dimension where it can go anywhere and any "when" and do anything one wishes it to do.

India at 60...Growing and Shining (Part-I)
Introduction. On 15th August 2006, when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation from Rampant of Lal Quila, India will be completing its 59 years of Independence and will be entering into "Diamond Jubilee" year of its existence.Let the celebrations continue for centuries and keep the tri-color high. Before I proceed further I like to share with you the Speech of Pt.Jawahar Lal Nehru delivered on 15th August 1947.Tryst with Destiny."Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.A moment comes which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, then an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity. At the dawn of history India started on her unending quest, and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her successes and her failures.Through good and ill fortune alike she has never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave her strength. We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us.Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future? Freedom and power bring responsibility. That responsibility rests upon this assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of India. Before the birth of freedom we have endured all the pains of labor and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now.Nevertheless, the past is over and it is the future that beckons to us now. That future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving so that we might fulfill the pledges we have so often taken and the one we shall take today. The service of India means the service of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity. The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us but so long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over. And so we have to labor and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams. Those dreams are for India, but they are also for the world, for all the nations and peoples are too closely knit together today for any one of them to imagines that it can live apart.Peace has been said to be indivisible, so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this one world that can no longer be split into isolated fragments. To the people of India whose representatives we are, we make appeal to join us with faith and confidence in this great adventure. This is no time for petty and destructive criticism, no time for ill will or blaming others. We have to build the noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell.".Little known facts about India.1.The official Sanskrit name for India is Bharat.2.INDIA has been called Bharat even in Satya yuga (Golden Age).3.The name `India' is derived from the River Indus, the valleys around which were the home of the early settlers. The Aryan worshippers referred to the river Indus as the Sindhu.4.The Persian invaders converted it into Hindu. The name `Hindustan' combines Sindhu and Hindu and thus refers to the land of the Hindus.5.The number system was invented by India.Aryabhatta was the scientist who invented the digit zero.6.Sanskrit is considered as the mother of all higher languages. This is because it is the most precise, and therefore suitable language for computer software.(a report in Forbes magazine, July 1987 ).7.Chess was invented in India.8.Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus are studies, which originated in India. The' place value system' and the 'decimal system' were developed in 100 BC in India.9.The first six Mogul Emperor's of India ruled in an unbroken succession from father to son for two hundred years, from 1526 to 1707.10.The World's First Granite Temple is the Brihadeswara temple at Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu. The shikhara is made from a single ' 80-tonne ' piece of granite. Also, this magnificent temple was built in just five years, (between 1004 AD and 1009 AD) during the reign of Rajaraja Chola.11.India is.The Largest democracy in the world, the 6th largest country in the world AND one of the most ancient and living civilizations (at least 10, 000 years old).12.The 13th century poet saint Gyandev created the game of snakes & ladders. It was originally called 'Mokshapat.' In the south, several dynasties, including the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Cheras, Cholas, Pallavas and Pandyas prevailed during different periods.Science; Engineering; Art; Literature; Mathematics; Astronomy; Religion and Philosophy flourished under the patronage of these kings.Following the invasions from Central Asia, between the tenth to the twelfth centuries, much of north India came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate, Mughal dynasty and later the Marathas who gradually expanded their reign throughout the Indian subcontinent.Nevertheless, several indigenous kingdoms flourished, especially in the south, like the Vijayanagara Empire.During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, several European countries, including Portugal, Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom, initially arrived as traders, later took advantage of the fractious nature of relations between the kingdoms, to establish colonies in the country.By 1856, most of India came under control of the British East India Company, with the capital at Calcutta.A year later, a nationwide insurrection of rebelling military units and kingdoms, known locally as the First War of Indian Independence (known as the Sepoy Mutiny In British texts) broke out, which failed even as it seriously challenged British rule.India thus came under the direct control of the British Monarch. In the early twentieth century, a nationwide struggle for independence was launched by the Indian National Congress, led by Indians such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru.Millions of protesters would engage in mass campaigns of civil disobedience with a commitment to ahimsa - total non-violence.Gandhi would lead Indians in the Dandi Salt March to defy the salt tax, and an all-out revolt in 1942 demanding that the British Quit India.India gained independence on August 15th, 1947 - 565 princely states united with British-era provinces to form a united nation, but not before the Muslim-majority provinces were partitioned as a result of the separatist campaign led by the Muslim League to form Pakistan.Years to Remember.India Before Independence.2500-1500 B.C .Indus Valley civilization.1500-200 B.C .Aryan civilization.2000-1000 B.C.Composition of the Upanishads and the great Epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.600-500 B.C.Mahavir and Buddha lay down the principles of Jainism and Buddhism.326 B.C .Alexander, The Great invades India.320 B.C .Chandragupta Maurya finds the Mauryan Dynasty.273 B.C.Asoka ascends the throne of Magadha.261 B.C .The Great Kalinga War that transforms Asoka.60 B.C .Rise of the Satavahana Dynasty.1-100 A.D . The Power of Positioning
The time-honored story around the Midwest is "The Wizard of Oz." Can you imagine what a shock it would be to go to sleep in the Midwestern United States and wake up in the Land of Oz!The splendor and excitement of arriving in a new land, full of new possibilities you never even dreamed possible.Seems to be a kindred reaction of sales professionals who, after years of rejection from the executive suites, seemingly overnight find themselves regularly conducting business in the executive suites. Now, if you're at all like your colleagues, you believe the Wicked Witch is personified in gatekeepers. Those executive assistants who seem determined to keep you from going through the castle gates and into the presence of the great and powerful Wizard.Just in case you're not used to calling on top decision makers, you'll be glad to know executives don't resemble the Terrible Wizard anymore than the mild mannered showman professor did in the land of Oz.An executive is just a man or woman in charge of a company, looking for the safest way to navigate the business and its people through the storms of commerce. And contrary to popular misconception, the executive assistant is really more closely aligned with the Good Witch Glenda who can tell you how to get to the great, powerful, mighty Oz.When you ask them, executive assistants will tell you they like to be treated with respect (who doesn't).They'll also let you know that one of her primary directives is to protect the executive's time from very draining people who suck up a lot of their precious time and provide nothing in return. It is a little known fact that she is also on the look out for people who can help the executive. The key to having the executive assistant to recognize you as a caller whom she should admit into the executive suites is to use the words executives use when talking with the assistant. As businesses grow, the executives' skill set grows to accommodate the needs of the business. While incubating the business many need for the executive to "do it all", book keeping; sales; marketing; and so forth. And the executive is challenged with figuring out "how to do everything that needs doing.".Then, as the business grows, the business hires professionals to do all of the "how to stuff".The executive finds it necessary to transforms himself from being the "how to guy" into becoming the "what guy." The guy who decides "what" the company will be doing as the years progress, and leaves the figuring out of the "how" to those at lower levels of the organization. So when a sales professional calls the office of the executive and the assistant hears the caller spew out "how his company can serve the executive " the assistant immediately transfers the call down the organizational ladder. This frustrates many a sales pro as they conclude the call was transferred because of the gatekeeper. When, in fact, the call would not have been transferred had the caller used the right language. Most sales professionals have the subconscious thinking of a "how" person and, to successfully sell to executives, want to learn the best way to approach the "what" person.Without a change of language, you'll sound like a "how" person who is a better fit with low level decision makers than executives.Executives know this.Executive assistants know this. The overwhelming majority of your colleagues do not grasp the importance of this kind of positioning. And most of those who do know, don't know how to make a change of thinking that positions them as belonging at the top.Even better to have the executive assistant on your side.Did you know she is actually looking for people to invite into the executive suites and present solutions to the executives business issues? So next time you hang up the phone thinking, "That 'Witch' referred me down.", know that most likely the reason for her decision had to do with the words you spoke.OK, Dorothy, now is the time to own your own power.Examine the words you speak.Learn the verbiage that positions you as the "what guy/gal" for your industry and then marvel as the Wizard says "he'd like to talk with you".Your rock solid positioning is to have the executive assistant as your "right hand person" and strongest ally.Forward this article to friends. They'll thank you for it!

The Evolution of Leadership: An Academic Perspective - Nu Leadership Series
"Wealth in the new regime flows directly from innovation, not optimization; that is, wealth is not gained by perfecting the known, but by imperfectly seizing the unknown." Kevin Kelly.Let's focus closely on the modern development of leadership thought.According to Georgia Sorenson, author of An Intellectual History of Leadership Studies. The Role of James MacGregor Burns, the word "leader" first appeared in the 1300s and stemmed from the root leden, meaning "to travel" or "show the way." Leadership was defined five centuries later.Traditionally, managing both the technical and human components has posed problems for leaders for centuries.Between 1945 and 1960, leadership scholars spent more of their effort on empirical research; however, from the 1970s onward, this research became theory driven. In developing strategies for this problem, researchers and practitioners have either adopted a "scientific" or "behavioral" approach. This fact is where the school of management thought evolved. The school of management provides a theoretical framework for studying leadership thought.Over the decades, management gurus have tried to organize and classify this enormous information related to management, and this is how the schools of management thought started. We will discuss the following schools. (a) the classical school, (b) the behavioral school, (c) the quantitative or management science school, (d) the systems school, and (e) the contingency school.Let's examine these schools more closely.ERA Snapshot..The classical school concept began in the 1800s.During that time, over 90% of Americans lived rurally.Between 1870-1900s, rural areas doubled and urban areas tripled. With the transition from a rural to industrial society, leaders lacked a process to motivate the unskilled workforce.Conversely, the Industrial Revolution brought new jobs, mostly filled by immigrants.Although the Mid-19th Century America was a land of opportunity, workers were living in awful conditions while the industrial elites benefited. This period, then, created a host of new advances and new problems for organizational leaders.Classical School. The classical school, which is the oldest formal school of management thought, generally focused on ways to manage work and organizations more efficiently. It can be further grouped into three areas which are scientific management, administrative management, and bureaucratic management. We will briefly discuss these areas and the leading advocates.Scientific Management began in the 1880s.Previously, management decisions were viewed as arbitrary, and workers operated at a slow pace.Scientific management was developed to create a systematic method to improve efficiency. The key proponents were Frederick W.Taylor, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, and Henry Gantt.Administrative Management began in the 1940s.Unlike scientific management, administrative management focused largely on jobs and work at the individual level of analysis. It provided a more general theory of management. The key proponent was Henri Fayol.Bureaucratic Management began in the 1920s.Earlier organizations were personality- and relationship-driven.A proposed form of organization called bureaucratic management was characterized by division of labor, hierarchy, formalized rules, impersonality, and the selection and promotion of employees based on ability. The key proponent was Max Weber.ERA Snapshot..When the behavioral concept began in the 1930s, there was a global depression that brought an abrupt shift from the fun-loving lifestyles of the Roaring 20s.As Socialists proclaimed the death of capitalism, Adolf Hitler was rising to power in Germany.Technology was still progressing as global communication increased.Roosevelt's New Deal brought enormous governmental intervention into societal problems.Unfortunately, it was also the beginning of World War II in 1939.Behavioral School. As a result of perceived weaknesses in the assumptions contained in the classical school, the behavioral school of management thought was created. Some felt that the classical school emphasized efficiency while disregarding the aspect of human behavior in organizations. The behavioral school focused on trying to understand the factors that affect human behavior at work. The behavioral school was two subgroups, human relations and behavior science.Human Relations can be traced to the Hawthorne Experiments in 1924 and concluded in the early 1930s.Two significant discoveries from the Hawthorne Experiments were found. a) workers' attitudes are associated with productivity and b) the workplace is a social system with informal group influences.According to the human relation school, the manager should possess critical skills for diagnosing the causes of human behavior at work so that he could effectively lead employees. Some of the best-known contributors include Mary Parker Follett, Chester Barnard, Abraham Maslow, and Elton Mayo.Today, this school has influenced management theory and practice in such areas as applied psychology.Behavior Science emerged in the 1950s and 1960s.Behavior science was a natural progression of the human relations school of thought. It focused primarily on applying conceptual and analytical methods to the problem of understanding and predicting human behavior in the workplace. Some of the major contributors include Douglas McGregor, Frederick Herzberg, and Ralph Stogdill. This school has contributed to the study of management by focusing on several areas such as personality, values, and leadership.ERA Snapshot..When the quantitative concept began, it was a decade dominated by World War II, which was widely viewed as the most destructive war in history. This decade marked the transition period between the radical 1930s and the conservative 1950s.One the economic front, the Marshall Plan, implemented by the US, gave billions of dollars for reconstructing war-devastated economies.Technology was being designed for major destruction. The first nuclear bomb was created, which dramatically changed international relationships.Quantitative School. This school emerged in the 1940s.The quantitative school objective was to increase the quality of managerial decision-making by applying mathematical and statistical approaches. This school was derived from the scientific management. The quantitative school was in three subgroups. management science, production, and operations management.Management Science developed during World War II as strategists tried to solve war related problems.Management Science utilizes mathematical and statistical approaches to solve management problems.Management Information Systems and Management Science are interconnected. The key proponent was George Dantzig.Today, this approach is being used in industry. An example would be a decision support system.Production and Operations Management. This school began in the 1940s.It focuses on operation and control of the production process. Its roots were similar to management science because it resulted from the war.Operational management targets productivity and quality of an organization. The key proponent was W.Edward Deming. Some of the areas of study include computer integrated manufacturing and just-in-time inventory systems.ERA Snapshot..When the systems concept began in the 1950s, the decade echoed the return of conservative values and the return to the 1920s-type consumer society. The 1950s marked a rapid rise in the conflict with the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union. The Cold War generated the Arms Race, Space Race, McCarthyism, and the Korean War.It also marks the return of the GIs and a baby boom. There was a high rate of unionization in industry and most of the technology supported the Cold War.During this time, most of the earlier internal American problems such as women's rights and civil rights were now suppressed as Americans settled into suburban life; however, suppressing these social issues would have a significant impact on the 20th Century.Systems School. This school began to have a strong impact in the 1950s.The system school focused on understanding the organization as an open system that transforms inputs into output.Managing techniques that would allow managers to relate different specialties and parts of the company to one another as well as external factors were used.In the systems theory, an organization is defined as a system with objectives. The school is built on the works of Ludwid von Bertalanffy, a biologist.ERA Snapshot..When the contingency concept began in the 1960s, the decade was a time of great social changes in the country. Many of the changes were reflective of the demographic changes brought by the baby boom generation, height of the Cold War, and dissolution of the European colonial empires. The Social revolution, civil rights movement, anti-War movements, human rights movement, and the Counterculture movement placed America in an unstable position.During this timeframe, protectionist, command, and mixed economies reached a peak.Contingency School. This school began in 1960s.The contingency school focused on applying management principles and processes primarily dictated by each unique situation. In the contingency theory, a leader's ability to lead is contingent upon various situational factors. Its application has been on management issues such as organizational design, job design, motivation, and leadership style.A few of the major contributors are Fred Fiedler, Joan Woodward, and Paul Lawrence. The Contingency Theory states that the leader's ability to lead is contingent upon various situational factors.Obviously, these schools made a significant contribution to modern day management, and these early results provide a blueprint for the current leadership paradigms in organizations.References..Barnet, T.(n.D.).Management Thought.Received on February 15, 2006 from http.//www.Referenceforbusiness.Com/management/Log-Mar/Management-Thought.Html.Bass, DIY Gear Review: Multi-Purpose Folding Ladders
If you're pressed for space or on a limited budget, a multi-purpose ladder might be just what you need for those everyday DIY tasks.Multi-purpose ladders are designed with four hinged sections that allow for maximum versatility. For example, it can be configured as a support for a solid top, forming a convenient workbench.Square rungs are preferable over round ones for safety, and box section stiles make for an exceptionally stable, strong and rigid ladder. If possible, opt for a multi-purpose ladder with click-stopped hinges that ensure a positive and safe lock on each ladder position.Multi-Purpose Ladder Configurations.A-frame ladder. Just a simple click of the hinge mechanism transforms the ladder into a traditional A-frame ladder that is versatile and stable.Staircase. Because multi-purpose ladders are incrementally adjustable, one side of the ladder can be set higher than another to facilitate use on stairs and other uneven surfaces.90-degree. In this free standing configuration, one side of the ladder remains perpendicular to the floor, while the other juts out at a comfortable angle for climbing. The perpendicular side allows it to be placed close to any vertical surface.Extension ladder. In this mode, the ladder is locked into a long, straight configuration for accessing second storey windows and trim, rooftops and tree limbs. With an optional work plank added, 2 multi-purpose ladders convert easily into a convenient scaffolding system. What Makes a Multi-Purpose Ladder So Exceptional?Multi-purpose ladders have a superior range of desirable features that make them extremely versatile while also quite safe.Features of a typical multi-purpose ladder include..Conforms to the latest EN131 European safety standard Durable aluminium construction with steel hinges Two wide stabiliser bars for extra safety Large rubberised feet Over 10 useful locking configurations Compact size when closed. about 100cm tall x about 70cm wide Maximum ladder length. about 13 feet Maximum step ladder height. about 5.5 feet Work platform. about 3 feet high x 4 feet 9 inches long Maximum load. about 150kg (23/5 stone) Ladder weight about 12kg (26 pounds) Extra large rubber feet for stability and grip 2-part 16mm thick decking units Clip-on work shelf Folding hook on work shelf for paint cans, tools, buckets, etc.Features to Look For in Multi-Purpose Ladders. When shopping for a multi-purpose ladder, look for additional features such as an anti-slip platform made from the same heavy-duty material used on industrial scaffold towers. The platform should be about 15mm thick, unlike those on inferior ladders, which can be as little as 1.5mm thick.A strong, durable anti-slip platform instantly transforms the ladder into a stable and versatile work platform.Be sure your ladder comes with non-slip, ridged rungs for maximum safety when ascending or descending.Multi-purpose ladders are designed to be inherently safe for use on a variety of surfaces, such as stairs, ramps, curbs, docks and other uneven surfaces.Multi-purpose ladders are excellent all-around ladders for a wide variety of everyday DIY tasks.

Ladder Safety Tips for a Step Ladder
Ladder safety starts at home. The habits of the family are generally passed onto the children. One of those habits is the use and often misuse of a Step Ladder.Even a Step Ladder can be dangerous if common sense is not used. There are 160,000 reported injuries each year from ladders, many of these would be due to lack of precautions and safety.Unfortunately many injuries result in the user being seriously injured even becoming a paraplegic or quadriplegic.Personal Experiences with Ladders..Step Ladder. The next door neighbor was painting his front porch ceiling using a 6 foot aluminum step ladder. He had a drop sheet under the ladder to protect the floor tiles. The ladder slipped, he fell and injured his spine and became a paraplegic. After many operations he lived his life in a wheelchair and passed away a few years later. His fall was only a few feet, but his life and his families lives were changed forever from a simple accident.Extension Ladder. This time it was a happy outcome.I had a roof plumber repairing the roof. His extension ladder was propped against the house, he went for his morning tea break. My three year old son decided to be one of the guys. The tradesman came back from his tea break, looked up and saw the three year old walking along the ridge capping. The tradesman very calmly called me, pointed to the roof.We treated it like a game, the tradesman climbed onto the roof, I calmly talked my son over him, who scooped him up, carried him down to safety. The tradesman and I looked at each other, swore, let a sigh of relief out and thanked God for keeping my son safe.Ladders are an essential piece of equipment for some many places and so many uses like..At home - changing light bulbs, cleaning gutters, painting. The trades person - from electricians to carpenters to painters. The warehouse - for stacking goods, general maintenance.Industrial and building sites - for trades people. The list is almost endless. The concern with using ladders is the potential to fall.Ladder Safety Tips - NEVER..1) stand on the top step - the stress on the ladder can make it wobble 2) over reach - a good tip is always keep your belt buckle within the rails of the ladder 3) attempt to move the ladder whilst standing on it - this method is called "walking 4) place ladder under electrical cables - especially aluminum step ladders, metal is a conductor of electricity, so is the human body.Use a wooden or fiberglass ladder.5) place on un-stable, un-level, wet or slippery surfaces, this is a disaster waiting to happen, just as my friend's unfortunate experience shared above 6) use when injured, tired or under the influence of substances including medication 7) leave any ladder unattended - as my example above, children love to climb.Ladder Safety Tips - ALWAYS..1) fully open the ladder - don't prop it against a wall and climb it, a step ladder is not designed for this purpose 2) secure the braces - Hint. the braces are there for a reason 3) climb to the first step, stop and ensure the ladder is stable by giving it a gentle wobble 4) always retain hold onto the ladder with at least one hand and wear good robust shoes 5) remove tools on the top of the ladder, especially screwdrivers, chisels, hammers, knives even paint. It is so easy to forget there are items on the top of ladder, if the ladder is moved, something hard, sharp or wet could be coming down on top of you or your surroundings very soon 6) make sure the ladder can take your weight plus any additional items like tools 7) work with someone else around, in case there is an accident immediate help is nearby.Follow these ladder safety tips for step ladders and enjoy a safe work environment.

It is always the first ladder I go for because it can do almost anything. I've used it for trimming and picking fruit trees, working on a wall above a roof, general construction, painting and handywork. It has even had a 450+ lb. guy on it without creaking! The ladder is much more stable than a conventional step ladder, due to its splayed lower legs. It is also more stable against a wall in the extention mode for the same reason. Each side is independently extendable so it is great on sloping surfaces. It can be climbed from either side in the step ladder mode. The best thing about it is that when it is fully collapsed, it stores in about the same space as a five foot step ladder. It will also stand by itself, so you don't need to lean it or hang it on a hook. It easily lays in a pickup bed or accross the back seat of a full size car. Sure, it's flexible for uneven heights (across sunken living room, stairs, uneven ground outside, etc.), but what I like most is that it is rock solid!!! The additional "work platform" is very nice to stand on for long periods of time or to set tools on (i.e., consider two if you're on your ladder much). When not fully extended, the overlapping steps create a broad step under foot. It is only a little bit more expensive than a ladder with an equivalent rating (250 lb, versus 150 for many ladders), and only a little heavier. Folded, however, it is easy to carry vertically simply by sticking your shoulder between two rungs and grabbing the second rung below with your hand. 47 of 49 people found the following review helpful By Youni (Clarksburg, MD United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Little Giant 10103LGW 300-Pound Duty Rating Ladder System with Work Platform, 22-Foot (Tools & Home Improvement) We first saw this ladder at a home show demonstration and thought it was awesome. [...]The ladder system is intuitive to use right of the box. Its aluminum channel construction is a bit heavier than cheap ladders in the usual home stores,,, but it is very stable; the spread legs make it quite resistent to sliding over; and it flexes very little even when fully extended. As an A-frame it is rock solid and does not shake at all. The ladder comes with a metal anti-slip platform that can be positioned on any step and used as a large ledge for prolong standing or to hold tools. The ladder latches and joints are steel parts and very solidly lock in. I like everything about this ladder! To the best of my knowledge there is no comparable ladder generally available. |
