Ask The Engineer: Is It Wise to Choose Cheap Gutter Guards?

Gutter covers and gutter guards can be inexpensive--down right cheap or they can be very expensive. How do you know if cheap gutter guards will work for you or if you really need the best leaf guard?Answer. it depends on how much tree debris you have and the design of the cheap leaf guards. If you're only dealing with leaves and tree debris from distant trees then you can go with cheap gutter guards. But would you want a cheap one that easily dislodges with wind or heavy animals such as raccoons or squirrels that can chew through them or dig them out of the gutter? Don't think so!The one that dislodge are flimsy screens made of plastic mesh or wire mesh. They usually get installed on top of the gutter and in some cases actually get screwed or clipped to the gutter. One such type is actually a solid top that is held in place with a clip that is the size of a quarter. The clip works loose and the gutter cover collapses into the gutter. They usually sell installed for around $6.00 per foot or more and are really worthless. After the first wind storm, they get blown to the ground or collapse into the gutter.Another style of hinged screen looks substantial. The problem is that it accumulates debris on the roof and when you lift it to remove the debris, the debris falls into the gutter. In summary, even in light debris conditions, all flimsy leaf guards require yearly inspections and maintenance. In light debris conditions you want an inexpensive one that gets directly screwed to the gutters or has clips that are screwed.Google Niagara gutter covers you'll find the type of single fin leaf guard you can use.Let's talk about heavy debris conditions. This is where it pays to find the absolute best gutter guard that you can possibly find.Why?Answer. because you don't want to choose an expensive one only to find it's a night mare.In fact most expensive leaf guards can be a night mare in heavy debris conditions.Despite their claims many pass debris into the gutters of sufficient amounts to clog the gutters--especially the single fin types that look like the Niagara system mentioned above.Their water collectors will also clog requiring maintenance--someone has to go up a ladder to clean them. For medium debris conditions, the best leaf guard is a hybrid of a single fin type gutter guard.Google Care-Free gutter covers and you'll find a single row louvered moderately priced system.Yet for heavy debris conditions the best gutter guard to get the job done is a double row louvered gutter guard.Google "Waterloov Gutter Guards" to find such a device. No matter how much debris or how heavy the debris, the gutters inside never clog and when the louvered water collectors clog, it is easily seen from the ground and can be easily serviced by the homeowner with a telescopic pole and brush. This type of gutter guard has been used since 1989.It's the only one if its kind with over a twenty year track record.

How to Construct Your Own Ladder Shelves

How to Construct Your Own Ladder Shelves

As a home owner you want your house to have a nice cozy lived in feel that your friends and family will enjoy each time they enter, but how do you keep it ordered and uncluttered? There are a few different pieces of furniture that can help you keep your belongings tidy and still give your interior space a creative edge. You could use cupboards or large display cabinets in the main rooms to store your things, though shelves are a better way to make use of the vertical space that few people consider. These days a hot item are ladder shelves, they come in a variety of design and look fantastic in almost any room.So why are ladder shelves so popular with house owners all of a sudden? One reason might be to do with the affects of the recent economic downturn; people are keeping a close hold on what money they have.Instead of spending your hard earned salaries on a brand new set of shelves the other option would be to make your own.You might be thinking that it is a huge job that may take over a week to complete, but you'd be wrong, making a set of ladder shelves is very simple and will cost you a fraction of the price of buying them new.Step by step to constructing your own ladder shelves. When you learn how easy it is to construct a simple set of ladder shelves, you'll wonder why you hadn't done it sooner. If you have a quick look around the house you probably have all the materials that you need, the most important part is having an 'A-Ladder' made from wood, the rest of the supplies can easily be bought at any hardware store or home depot.(1) The first step is to buy or find your self a second hand 'A-Ladder', these are old wooden step ladders with 5 - 6 rungs, if you don't have one in your garage or back garden you may be able to find a cheap alternative at a flea market or back yard sale.Don't pay more than $10 for a used A-Ladder and if you have to go to your local home depot they are available for bout $20 each.(2) The second step in building your ladder shelves is to take a few measurements, you will need to know the distance between each rung level, this is so that you can cut out your shelves to the right size. After you have the correct measurements, you will need to add about 16 to 17 inches to the length values, each platform needs to be a little longer than the distance between each rung.Don't forget to add up all the lengths and buy enough wood board for all of the shelves, you might be able to get wood for free at your local landfill site.(3) You now have the main frame, which is the ladder and the shelves prepared. The next step is to choose a color to paint the ladder shelves; a lot of people opt for a neutral matte white or rustic earthy brown.Don't use oil-based paint; this will make your final product look a little unattractive.(4) The last step is to put the ladder shelves onto the A-ladder frame. If you're worried about the shelves falling over under the weight of your belongings you can use glue to attach the platforms to each rung. Some people like to use a few screws just to make sure it is stable; your ladder shelves are now ready for decorating.

Product Description

Includes Classic Model 22 19-ft All-in-One Ladder - 10103LGW, Work Platform

Amazon.com Review

Look high and low, but you're not going to find a better ladder than this one. Not only is it incredibly stable when extended, it takes the place of seven ladders and two trestles, and you won't even break a sweat converting it. Two outer ladders telescope over the inner unit, and a locking center hinge on the inner ladder makes the A-frame possible without spreader bars or braces. The locking assembly was smooth and positive in our trials; the inner ladder slid freely and easily. Transforming the ladder from one configuration to another was no struggle at all. The inner and outer side rails are made of aircraft-grade aluminum; slip-resistant rungs and feet made us feel like we hadn't left the ground. Yes, it costs a bit more than other ladders, but you get what you pay for. This ladder will last a lifetime, and it's the only one you'll ever need. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5.0 out of 5 stars Stable Ladder for people who don't like Ladders, April 29, 2000

Al the Pal "Al the Pal" (The Fruited Plain, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Little Giant 10103LGW 300-Pound Duty Rating Ladder System with Work Platform, 22-Foot (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had my Little Giant for four years. It is always the first ladder I go for because it can do almost anything. I've used it for trimming and picking fruit trees, working on a wall above a roof, general construction, painting and handywork. It has even had a 450+ lb. guy on it without creaking!

The ladder is much more stable than a conventional step ladder, due to its splayed lower legs. It is also more stable against a wall in the extention mode for the same reason. Each side is independently extendable so it is great on sloping surfaces. It can be climbed from either side in the step ladder mode.

The best thing about it is that when it is fully collapsed, it stores in about the same space as a five foot step ladder. It will also stand by itself, so you don't need to lean it or hang it on a hook. It easily lays in a pickup bed or accross the back seat of a full size car.

Wing also makes a "work platform" for this ladder that adds to its... Read more

This review is from: Little Giant 10103LGW 300-Pound Duty Rating Ladder System with Work Platform, 22-Foot (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've never used any of my other ladders (other than my 2' one) since getting this one. Sure, it's flexible for uneven heights (across sunken living room, stairs, uneven ground outside, etc.), but what I like most is that it is rock solid!!! The additional "work platform" is very nice to stand on for long periods of time or to set tools on (i.e., consider two if you're on your ladder much). When not fully extended, the overlapping steps create a broad step under foot. It is only a little bit more expensive than a ladder with an equivalent rating (250 lb, versus 150 for many ladders), and only a little heavier. Folded, however, it is easy to carry vertically simply by sticking your shoulder between two rungs and grabbing the second rung below with your hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ladder System on Market!, July 4, 2002
By
Youni (Clarksburg, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Little Giant 10103LGW 300-Pound Duty Rating Ladder System with Work Platform, 22-Foot (Tools & Home Improvement)
We first saw this ladder at a home show demonstration and thought it was awesome. [...]The ladder system is intuitive to use right of the box. Its aluminum channel construction is a bit heavier than cheap ladders in the usual home stores,,, but it is very stable; the spread legs make it quite resistent to sliding over; and it flexes very little even when fully extended. As an A-frame it is rock solid and does not shake at all. The ladder comes with a metal anti-slip platform that can be positioned on any step and used as a large ledge for prolong standing or to hold tools. The ladder latches and joints are steel parts and very solidly lock in. I like everything about this ladder! To the best of my knowledge there is no comparable ladder generally available.

Selecting the Best Ladder For Your Needs

Selecting the Best Ladder For Your Needs

Every individual will find that they are in need of a ladder at one time or another. It may be for reaching a light fixture high above your foyer staircase, or to perform your yearly gutter cleaning routine. When you have a difficulty to get to place around your house, you may not be able to take care of the task without an adequate ladder. Many people have a ladder or two at their home, but are you sure that you have the best ladder for the jobs that need to be done around your home? What are the things to consider in order to select the right ladder for your needs? For most homeowners, jobs that just require a small amount of additional height, can be accomplished with their step ladder, while tasks a little higher up can be done using their extension ladder, both of these ladders are generally available in most households. Many individuals may be unaware that simply comparing step ladders to extension ladders, doesn't cover all of the aspects of ladders.First, there are four fundamental materials used in constructing ladders. Wood, aluminum, steel, and fiberglass, and you will need to decide which of these will provide the best ladder for your needs. Is electrical shock a worry when performing the tasks that you will use the ladder for? If so, you will need to consider the fact that aluminum ladders will conduct electricity.Over time, wood ladders that are not carefully stored, will become wobbly and their steps may loosen, along with the problem that the wood may rot and split. If you leave your fiberglass ladder outside, the weather will cause the fiberglass to break down. So, it seems that none of the materials used will be the best for every circumstance. It is therefore important to take into account how your ladder will be stored, and the environment in which it will be used, when selecting the best material for your ladder to be constructed of.If you are considering an extension ladder, and the tasks that you will use the ladder for will require a 16 foot ladder, you should purchase an extension ladder that telescopes out 18 to 20 feet. This will allow for an excess overlap that will give you added security when you are up on the ladder at these heights. You will also need to compare high priced ladders with the cheap ones and determine what your acceptable price range is.The strength and stability of the ladder that you choose is very important as you are trusting it with your life when you climb to significant heights. So, you may think twice before trying to save a few dollars in this area.Your neighborhood discount store will likely offer a basic ladder at a fairly inexpensive price.Remember, in most cases, you get what you pay for, so your cheaper ladder may be constructed of a less sturdy material that will hold a lower weight capacity. No one enjoys climbing up 15 feet in the air, and wobbling around unsteadily while you are up there. Are you in need of a ladder for specific situations? If so, it is essential that you have the right ladder for the right job.Especially perilous or unique circumstances will require the use of a specialty ladder to be sure that the job can be accomplished safely. The Aluminum Chimney Sweeper Ladder from Krause is an example of a specialty ladder. Will you be performing work on a staircase? This will require that one set of the ladders legs be adjustable to ensure stability while you are working on the ladder. These specialty ladders are designed to perform an array of functions including acting as a step ladder, extension ladder, scaffold support, and may also double as a work bench in a pinch! The last thing to consider is whether you will require any accessories to add security and stability to your ladder.Selecting the proper accessories, is equally as essential as the selection of your ladder itself. An example of a crucial accessory is the padding used on top of the ladder to keep the it from damaging the exterior siding on your home.To avoid slippage, you will want to pad the legs of the ladder. Some other useful ladder accessories include work platforms, stabilizer wall standoffs, ladder levelers, work platforms, slip on plastic siding protectors, jacks, and many more. When you are in the process of buying a ladder, check the weight capacity to be sure that it will meet your requirements.Settling on a 220 lb rated ladder may not be adequate even if you weigh 200 lbs, so ensure that you choose one that holds plenty of weight. If you choose your ladder wisely, it can be a purchase that lasts forever! You will be glad you opted for the ladder that holds 270 lbs, when 10 years from now, you long for the days that you weighed 200 lbs.
