Are Ladders Dangerous?

Are Ladders Dangerous?

Not a lot of people know about the number of injuries and deaths that are related to use on ladders every year. The facts are out there though, millions of people throughout the world are injured using ladders year after year, and there are a significant number of deaths too. It's interesting to visit a hospital and talk to those with broken bones.A large number of them will have done it from a ladder accident, and often they were under a meter off the ground. This leads me to conclude that ladders are dangerous, but only because of the way that they are used.If they are used exactly as the manufacturer describes you won't have any issue. However, because people think 'this won't happen to me' the ladders are used incorrectly and people are injured and killed.Ladders should be thoroughly checked before use, and they need to be regularly maintained. When the rubber feet wear out, or a rung becomes bent it needs to be fixed, or replaced entirely. In a workplace, a damaged ladder should be tagged out immediately, or anyone who sees the ladder is liable for the damage that occurs to another person using that ladder.Ladders are great tools, but they are designed for specific purposes. You don't use an extension ladder to work off, or a metal ladder if you are an electrician.Do some research and find out what ladders are designed for what and go from there. If you take things a bit slower, with a bit more care then you will find that your risk when using a ladder is almost nothing.
