Using Cable Ties - The Simplest Fastener Known To Man
Let's face it fastenings do not get more simple than a cable tie do they? They are sold in their hundreds of thousands if not millions each day Worldwide, and this is because they are one of the most versatile fasteners ever invented to date. They are made of tough nylon, and are virtually indestructible, as they do not rust or wear out, as even if they are attached to something that moves about, such as a cable tie holding a banner down, they are very resistant to wear by chaffing. They are commonly used for fastening bunches of electric cables together or fastening electrical cables to duct work, although the uses of them in reality are pretty much endless, and far too numerous in number to list here.To use one you simply select one that is the right length to go around what you wish to fasten together, and then push the pointed end of the cable tie through the gap on the other end that contains the ratchet. The cable tie is then pulled tight by hand and then in many cases pulled to its maximum tightness with pliers. The excess part of the cable tie is then cropped off with cutters, as the nylon is often so strong, particularly on the wider ties, that you cannot crop them with scissors. This is done mainly for neatness so that the tail of the tie does not catch on anything else, and it is surplus to requirements as due to the one way ratchet action of the cable tie, once tightened it cannot be undone. The only practical way to undo one is to cut it open.Their advantage for many contractors is as they are lightweight, a large number of them can be put in a pocket and this makes them ideal for use when carrying out work high up on a ladder such as when fixing cables to duct work, as it avoids the contractor having to keep coming up and down as they would have to do if the were using screws instead.Unlike screws you need no tools like a cordless drill, all you need to fasten them is your hands, and some pliers to pull them really tight if needs be.They are very fast to use and can be put on and tightened in just a couple of seconds, this also makes them popular for fastening a multitude of other things such as fastening promotional banners to railings.
